Morocco: Africa’s New Tourism Champion

What’s better than beating a personal record? It’s shattering an existing world record!

When it comes to tourism in Africa, Egypt has long held the crowning title for the most visited country on the continent, seconded by Morocco. However, 2025 began on an interesting note for the Kingdom of Light as Morocco emerged as the most visited country on the continent according to data provided by its Ministry of Tourism.

Morocco reports a record of 17.4 million visitors in 2024 surpassing Egypt which also set a personal record with 15.7 million arrivals last year according to a bloomberg report.

According to The World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), Africa welcomed 6% more tourists than in January-September 2024 the same months of 2019. By subregions, North Africa and Central America saw the strongest performance in January-September 2024, with 18% and 16% more international arrivals than before the pandemic respectively.

The 2024 visitor count reflects a 20% increase from 2023, despite the magnitude 6.8 earthquake which hit near the popular Marrakesh region a year ago in September 2023. Morocco’s success also translates into revenue generation which increased from $10.5 billion in 2023 to $11 billion in 2024, thanks to its tourism industry.

Morocco’s tourism sector is expected to boom even more this year. It is set to host the AFCON (African Cup of Nations) from December 21 2025 to January 18 2026. During this time, the country is expecting to record an astounding 18.5 million visitors and hoping to break more records.

The country aims to be among the top 15 global tourist destinations in the world.

“These remarkable figures represent a major step towards our goal of positioning Morocco among the top 15 global tourist destinations”, Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor said in a press release last week.

However according to the most recent data available from the UN, Morocco would need to surpass  japan’s 25 million international tourist count in order to achieve this.
