Oneworld carriers Malaysia Airlines and British Airways have signed a code sharing agreement which takes effect today.
The Malaysian carrier will codeshare on BA-operated flights from London Heathrow to Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle.
Subject to regulatory approval, the codeshare will be progressively extended to other European destinations between 2019 and 2020, including Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Vienna, Brussels, Geneva, Hamburg, Lyon, Toulouse, Paris and Zurich.
In turn, BA will codeshare on Malaysia Airlines-operated flights to 14 Malaysian destinations, as well as nine destinations in Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Vietnam.
“This codeshare will provide an excellent opportunity to expand our UK and European network without having to mount our own flights to the various cities there,” says Malaysia Airlines group chief executive Izham Ismail.
“This is part of our strategy to develop commercial cooperation with Oneworld alliance members, besides enhancing air connectivity with key priority markets overseas for increased tourist arrivals into Malaysia”.
Both carriers operate a Kuala Lumpur-London Heathrow service, twice-daily for Malaysia Airlines and BA on a daily basis.
Earlier this year, Malaysia Airlines and fellow Oneworld member Japan Airlines signed a memorandum of understanding for a joint business agreement that allows the carriers to coordinate schedules, capacity, sales and marketing, and revenue planning on their passenger services between Japan and Malaysia.
Soon after that, Malaysia signed a pact with Singapore Airlines to expand their codesharing agreement, and to explore potential areas of collaboration, including cargo and MRO services.
