After setting a number of records, Gujarat’s 597 ft tall Statue of Unity has now found a place in TIME Magazine. It has made to the second annual list of World’s Greatest Places 2019, which is a compilation of 100 new and noteworthy destinations to experience in the year. Apart from the statue, Mumbai’s Soho House also made it to the list.
Regarding the selection procedure of the World’s Greatest Places, TIME opined that they evaluated each place in terms of certain factors, such as originality, sustainability, quality, influence, and innovation.
The Statue of Unity was unveiled last year and is built on an islet in the Narmada river. The statue set a record for being the world’s tallest statue and was built as a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. A prominent leader of the Indian freedom movement, Sardar Patel was also known as the Iron Man of India, who was responsible for the integration of several princely states into modern India.
As of now, there are several projects in the pipeline to ensure that this spot turns into a popular tourist spot. Reportedly, a world-class zoo, by the name Sardar Patel Zoological Park, will be developed across an area of 1300 ac near the statue. Additionally, boating activities will be started near the statue as a jetty is being constructed in the Narmada.
Soho House that also featured in TIME Magazine is located in an 11-storey building, overlooking the Arabian Sea. It houses a cinema with 34 seats, a library, and a rooftop bar and pool. It boasts of block-printed fabrics, highlighting Rajasthani culture, sari-coated lampshades, and cane furniture.
